CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's swimming team established a school record in the 200-yard medley relay Thursday to highlight action in the Tar Heel Invitational II swimming meet at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium on the UNC campus.

Carolina's 200-yard medley relay was clocked in 1:28.27, which broke the old school record of 1:28.66 by nearly four-tenths of one second. The relay included senior Ted Brisson of Goldsboro, N.C. swimming the backstroke leg in 22.68 seconds, sophomore Brad Kline of Charlotte, N.C. swimming the breaststroke leg in 24.65 seconds, senior Tucker Shade of Decatur, Ill. swimming the butterfly leg in 21.06 seconds, and freshman Kevin Erndl of Martinez, Ga. swimming the freestyle leg in 19.88 seconds.

The previous UNC school record in the event was 1:28.66 set in 1998 by Brisson (22.52), Scott Troy (25.44), Shade (21.04) and Chris Jennings (19.66).

Bids to the 1999 NCAA Championships in men's swimming will be released by the NCAA next Thursday. Both Tar Heel medley relays are under consideration for bids to the championships as well as individual swimmers Shade in the butterfly events and sophomore Ethan Hall (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) in the breaststroke events.
