Kinderwater Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Freshman Joe Kinderwater set two career bests, established a school record and led Carolina to its first men's swimming and diving victory over Virginia in 10 years and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for Jan. 14-20, 2008. Kinderwater swam a time making him the second fastest performer in ACC history in the 1000-yard freestyle in the 151-149 victory over Virginia. The Lancaster, Pa., native won the 1000-yard freestyle in 8:58.09, taking 9.08 seconds off his previous career best time. His time broke Chip Peterson's school record in the 1000-yard freestyle which was 9:02.38 set in 2007. It was less than four seconds off the ACC record set by Virginia's Fran Crippen in 2003 at 8:54.56. Kinderwater also set his own personal best in the 500-yard freestyle in winning that event in 4:26.04. Kinderwater's previous career best was 4:26.80.

Durham native Vincent Ramirez led the Tar Heels to their 33rd win over Duke in the last 34 meetings with a pin of Mike Bell in just 57 seconds at 149 pounds. He has won via fall in each of his last two bouts and is now 11-7 overall and 5-3 in duals.

Junior, Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Averaged 22 points and 12.5 rebounds as the Tar Heels went 1-1 in conference play. Led all scorers and shared game rebounding honors in the win at Georgia Tech as he scored 27 points and grabbed 11 boards. Had 18 points in the opening half and went 13 for 15 from the free throw line. Had 17 points, 13 in the second half, in the home loss to Maryland. Grabbed 14 rebounds, the second time this year her has pulled down that many. Had six offensive rebounds, helping the Tar heels score 27 points off missed shots.

CHRISTINE NGUYEN
Gymnastics, All-Around
Plano, Texas

Sophomore Christine Nguyen earned first place in the all-around with a score of 38.875, including a first place finish on the balance beam, to lead North Carolina to a season-opening victory at the George Washington Invitational. North Carolina scored 193.575 to win the meet. Nguyen was sixth on vault (9.675), third on uneven bars (9.750), first on balance beam (9.725) and second on floor exercise (9.725).
