UNC Swimmers Dominate Morning Session At Gamecock Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming teams placed 19 swimmers into Friday night finals at the 2008 Gamecock Invitational at the Carolina Natatorium in Columbia, S.C. Altogether, 31 UNC women's swimmers and 30 Carolina men's swimmers qualified to swim in tonight's superfinals, championship finals and consolation finals.

Diving preliminaries were being conducted Friday afternoon and these totals do not include those individuals.

The Tar Heel women have 10 entries tonight in superfinals, 15 in championship finals and six in consolation finals. For the men, the totals are nine, 13 and eight, respectively.

Both teams enter tonight with large leads in the team races among the six competing schools. Those leads are expected to increase tonight.

UNC swimmers totaled 35 season best times and two career best times in the morning preliminaries.

Sophomore Chip Peterson set a personal best in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:40.62.

Senior Kimmy Davis established her career best in the 100-yard backstroke at 56.94 seconds.

Finals begin Friday night at 6 p.m.
