CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's and women's swimming teams wound up a successful weekend of swimming and diving in sweeping to the titles of the 14th annual Nike Cup Championships at the Maurice J., Koury Natatorium.

The 18th-ranked Tar Heel women swept to the title of the women's meet by scoring 1261 points with Louisiana State in second place with 713 points. On the men's side, the 23rd-ranked Tar Heel men's team won the Nike Cup title with 1072 points. LSU and Texas A&M fought a close battle for second place with the Tigers ending up with 735.5 points and the Aggies scoring 713.5. points.

Carolina was led on the women's side by sophomore Katie Hathaway, junior Summer Mack and senior Kelly McLaughlin. Mack won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:59.95, an NCAA B consideration time for the Satellite Beach, Fla. native. Hathaway had an NCAA "B" cut and set a Nike Cup Championships record in the 200-yard breaststroke by winning in 2:13.87. McLaughlin led a 1-2-3 sweep by the Tar Heels in the 200-yard butterfly, winning in an NCAA "B" cut time of 2:01.51. The UNC women also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:27.56. The winning relay consisted of Hathaway, Mack, Stefanie Rulis and Jennifer Strasburger.

On the men's side, Carolina freshman Stephen Mohr won the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:35.97. Another Carolina freshman, Sean Quinn, earned the title in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:00.31, an NCAA "B" cut.

Selected swimmers for UNC will compete the weekend following Thanksgiving in the United States Open at San Antonio, Texas. The Tar Heels will train over the holidays in Cocoa Beach, Fla. and will compete in the Cocoa Beach Invitational there. UNC's next dual meet action will come after the first of the year against Clemson in Chapel Hill.
