CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--North Carolina's 18th-ranked women and 23rd-ranked men increased their leads Friday night in the 1999 Nike Cup Swimming and Diving Championships at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium.

The Tar Heel women took a prohibitive lead after the second day of competition and should coast to the team championship on Saturday. UNC leads with 910 points, while LSU is second with 541 points in the 11-team field.

The Carolina men don't have a sizeable a lead as their female counterparts, but the Tar Heels are well poised to win the championship on Saturday as well. The Tar Heels lead the meet with 776, while LSU and Texas A&M are jousting for second place with the Tigers scoring 521 points so far and the Aggies 494.5.

North Carolina junior Summer Mack (Satellite Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Katie Hathaway (Matthews, N.C.) each won two individual events on Friday night to lead the effort of the Tar Heel women. Mack pulled off the double in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke. Hathaway captured captured titles in both the 400-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breasststroke. Hathaway had NCAA "B" cuts in both events, winning the 400 IM in 4:16.98 and the 100 breast in 1:03.02. Mack also had a pair of NCAA "B" cuts, winning the 100 fly in 55.48 and the 100 back in 55.25. Senior Kelly McLaughlin also turned in a brilliant swim for the Tar Heels in the 400 IM, meeting an NCAA "B" cut with a time of 4:22.29.

LSU's women won the other two individual events on Friday night with Mandy Leach taking top honors in the 200-yard freestyle and Jamie Watkins capturing the one-meter diving competition.

North Carolina's women won both relay events with Christy Watkins, Janna Turner, Mack and Stefanie Rulis winning the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:45.82. The Tar Heels' 800-yard freestyle relay of Hathaway, Rulis, Katie Scoggins and Jennifer Strasburger won the championship in 7:34.79.

Several Carolina men's swimmers also turned into oustanding performances. Junior Dave Slawinski met his NCAA "B" cut in the 400-yard individual medley as he won that event in 3:53.04, the fourth fastest time in UNC school history. Sophomore Chris Helin, who on Thursday captured the 200 IM, won top honors on Friday in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56 seconds flat. That was also a career best time for the versatile swimmer from the New York City suburbs. Freshman Drew Hathaway scorched the field in the 100-yard buttefly finals to win in 49.38, a career best time for the Matthews, N.C. native. Hathaway took more than 2.5 seconds off his previous career best of 51.90.

LSU's men won two individual events with Mattias Ohlin capturing the super final of the 100-yard butterfly and Rodrigo Castro winning the super final of the 200-yard freestyle, both in NCAA "B" cut times. Texas A&M had one individual win with Riley James capturing top honors in the 100-yard backstroke.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Texas A&M took 1-2 with a pair of superb relays, while the Tar Heels were right behind with 3-4 finishes. The Aggies also won the 800-yard freestyle relay, edging out LSU by seven one-hundredths of a second.

Action continues for the final day of competition on Saturday at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium with preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m. All sessions are free to the public.
