North Carolina Sweeps Duke In Swimming and Diving

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams both scored solid victories over the Duke Blue Devils in the Atlantic Coast Conference opening meets of the season for Coach Frank Comfort's Tar Heels. The UNC men defeated Duke 183-100 and the Tar Heel women routed Duke 164-123 at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium. Junior Casey Coble and sophomore Reid Owen both picked up two individual wins to lead the Tar Heel men, now 2-2 overall on the season and 1-0 in the ACC. Junior Kelly Weeks had a pair of wins for the Carolina women who improved to 3-1 overall on the campaign and 1-0 in the ACC. Owen won the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 9:20.86. He had never gone under 10 minutes in the event previously. He also won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:38.26. Coble had a pair of individual wins as he swept the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.48 and the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:08.71. Tar Heel sophomore Eddy Matkovich swam the butterfly leg on the 200-yard medley relay and he also captured the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 51.09. On the women's side, Weeks had a pair of wins as she took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.74 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:54.39. Weeks also swam on UNC's victorious 200-yard medley relay. Junior Becky Acker also swam on the winning relay and she won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:17.26. On the women's side, freshman Allison Herman won the 200-yard butterfly in a personal best time of 2:05.11 while freshman Leila Martin finished second in a career best time of 5:02.37 in the 500-yard freestyle.
The Blue Devils men are now 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in the ACC. The Blue Devil women are 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
The win was worth one point for UNC in the 2002-03 Carlyle Cup competition between UNC and Duke. UNC now leads this year's race by a score of 8.5-5.5.
