UNC Swimmers Win ACC Openers Against Duke

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their 2001-02 Atlantic Coast Conference dual meet seasons Tuesday evening by recording decisive victories over arch-rival Duke at Koury Natatorium. The Tar Heel women won 184-104 while the men won by a 227-65 score.

The victories were worth one point in the 2001-02 Carlyle Cup standings between the two schools. UNC now leads the all-sports trophy competition by a 13-1 score. It takes 24.5 points to clinch the Carlyle Cup.

UNC's men improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the ACC with the win. Duke's men are now 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the ACC. UNC's women improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Duke's women are 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.

The men's meet featured three double event winners in individual events. Carolina freshman Justin Lynch won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.78 and the 200-yard backstroke in 1:56.53. UNC senior Greg Johnson won the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:37.69 and the 100-yard butterfly in 51.44. Duke had a double winner in Ryan Spoon as he won both breaststroke events.

Carolina's Kert Johnson and Justin Donato both swam on two winning relays for the Tar Heels and senior Chris Helin won the 200-yard butterfly while anchoring the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Carolina women were led by juniors Christy Watkins and Janna Turner and sophomore Jessi Perruquet. Each won an individual event and also swam on both winning relay teams. Individually Perruquet won the 50 free, Watkins the 100 fly and Turner the 200 fly. UNC junior Ashley Benner swept the one- and three-meter diving events in leading the Tar Heels to victory.

 

 

The Blue Devils were led by two-event winner Lauren Cornet in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle.
