Tar Heel Women Lead, Men Trail Minnesota At Two-Day Dual Meet

  • MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - The No. 18 University of North Carolina women's swimming and diving team leads No. 23 Minnesota 102-84 and the No. 11 Minnesota men's swimming and diving squad leads the No. 21 Tar Heels 129-57 after the first day of a two-day swimming and diving double dual meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center Friday night. The Tar Heel women lead North Dakota 151-32 in their competition while the UNC men lead UND 133-50 in their head-to-head battle.

    The Tar Heels' women's 200-yard medley relay took a first-place finish by .13 seconds over the Golden Gophers. The relay of junior Meagan Eickman, Lizzy Bruce, Lindsey Marck and Aubrette Biegel touched in 1:45.96 to edge the Minnesota relay which was timed in 1:46.09.

    A corps of Tar Heel freshmen had some of the most impressive swims of the night for Coach Frank Comfort's team as the women staked out a lead over the Golden Gophers. Freshman Aubrette Biegel was in on three wins along with sophomore Lindsey Marck. Senior Lizzy Bruce, junior Meagan Eickman and freshman Whitney Sprague all weere part of two wins.

     

     

    North Carolina freshman Mandi Arak captured the one-meter diving competition with a score of 535.45 points. Another Carolina freshman, Whitney Sprague, captured the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:51.42. She outtouched Yuen Kobayashi of Minnesota by 0.16 seconds. Sprague's time moved her into the No. 3 spot on the UNC career depth chart in the 1000 free.

    Freshman Aubrette Biegel took the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:50.75. The Tar Heels continued to win close races as junior Meagan Eickman won the 100-yard backstroke in 57.18, edging Katie Wind of the Golden Gophers by .14 of a second. Junior Lizzy Bruce joined Eickman and Biegel as winners of a relay event and individual event when she finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a clocking of 1:05.51. Marck became the fourth Tar Heel who swam on the winning 200 medley relay to capture an individual race when she clocked a 2:01.40 winning time in the 200-yard butterfly.

    The Tar Heel women also won the most exciting race of the evening as UNC went 7:26.54 in the 800-yard freestyle relay, just outtouching Minnesota which was .03 seconds behind at 7:26.57. The Carolina relay included frehsman Whitney Sprague, sophomore Lindsey Marck, senior Amanda Smith and freshman Aubrette Biegel.

    On the men's side, freshman Yi-Ky Saw won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:12.80 which moves him into seventh place all-time on the Tar Heels' depth chart in the event. North Carolina's second win came from senior Josh Glasco who won the 200-yard butterfly by almost two seconds, touching at 1:49.68.

    The two-day meet continues Saturday with 10 more events on the men's and women's side. The second day competition begins at 12 noon Central Time.
