Chapel Hill, N.C - North Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to the nationally-ranked Minnesota aquatic teams Saturday at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium. Carolina's No. 13 men fell to No. 9 Minnesota in a 220-146 decision. The No. 15 Tar Heel women fell to the No. 11 Golden Gophers 217-151.

Senior Erica Schiffler took first place on the one-meter diving board with a score of 258.75, sweeping both boards during the two-day competition.

Sophomore Tyler Harris led the Tar Heels with a decisive win in the 400-yard individual medley. Harris' NCAA "B" qualifying time of 3:51.17 bested the rest of the field by over five seconds. Senior tri-captain Yi-Khy Saw grabbed third place and sophomore Joe Kinderwater took fourth.

Carolina took the top spots in the men's and women's 200-yard backstrokes. Junior Megan Steeves won the women's event in 2:01.38 and junior tri-captain Jeff James took the men's race in 1:47.02.

Tar Heel sophomore Chip Peterson won his first event of the season after redshirting last year, taking the men's 500-yard freestyle in 4:29.19.

Sophomore Tyler Harris won his second event of the day by taking the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:01.72, eclipsing his in-season best by over a second. In the same event, sophomore Flynn Jones swam a career best time of 2:05.70, shattering his previous personal best from earlier in the month by over two seconds.

The women's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Megan Steeves, Rebecca Kane, Katura Harvey and Aubrette Biegel won the final event of the afternoon in 3:23.63.

The Tar Heels return to action next Saturday at 12 noon in a tri-meet versus Maryland and George Mason in College Park, Md.
