Tar Heel Women In Third Place After Day One of Dallas Classic

Dallas, T.X. - The nine member Tar Heel squad stands in third place after nine events at Perkins Natatorium on the campus of Southern Methodist University. In a tight race among six teams ranked in the CSCAA Top 25, the top three teams are separated by a mere fourteen points after day one.

No. 16 Southern California leads the pack with 161 points and No. 12 SMU is in second with 149 points. No. 15 North Carolina is third with 147 points.

In the first event of the evening, the Tar Heel 400-yard medley relay team of Megan Steeves, Alison Clemens, Layne Brodie, and Rebecca Kane placed second in the competitive field with a time of 3:45.52.

Freshman Laura Moriarty took third in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:21.00. Sophomore Alison Clemens finished eighth in 4:22.78.

Sophomore Katura Harvey placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a career best time of 1:48.61, besting her previous record of 1:48.66 by five hundredths. Her time moves her into eighth place on Carolina's All-Time Top 10 depth chart. Junior Ashley Howard grabbed tenth place in 1:50.60.

In the women's 100-yard butterfly, freshman Layne Brodie placed fourth in 56.06. Fellow freshman Laura Moriarty took eleventh place with a time of 57.76.

 

 

Freshman diver Jenna Moore placed fourth on the one-meter board with a score of 244.50.

Megan Steeves finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.62. Ashley Howard took eighth with a time of 57.47.

In their third swims of the night, Layne Brodie and Alison Clemens placed second and eighth, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke. Brodie swam an impressive 1:02.59, just .47 off her career best time.

Sophomore Rebecca Kane swam to a fourth place finish in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.53. Senior Aubrette Biegel placed ninth in 24.22.

The 800-yard freestyle relay team of Megan Steeves, Katura Harvey, Aubrette Biegel and Ashley Howard finished third in the final event of the evening.

The Dallas Classic continues tomorrow with action beginning at 7 p.m. (CT)
