CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened up their 1999-2000 season against the University of Georgia Thursday afternoon at Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, dropping both meets to the highly-regarded Bulldogs.

The top-ranked Georgia Bulldog women's team defeated the 18th-ranked Tar Heels by a score of 177-98, while the #8 Georgia men's team downed the 22nd-ranked Heels, 174.5-117.5.

Georgia's women were the first defending NCAA champions to ever appear in a meet at Koury Natatorium. Their performance Thursday underlined why they are the #1 preseason ranked team again this year.

Individual winners for the Tar Heels in the men's meet on Thursday were sophomore Chris Helin in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley, freshman Sean Quinn in the 200-yard breaststroke and sophomore Sebastien Moity in the 100-yard butterfly. UNC's 400-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore John Spaziano, sophomore Kevin Erndl, sophomore Kert Johnson and sophomore Justin Rossi was also victorious.

Freshman diver Ashley Benner swept both the one- and three-meter diving events for Carolina's women's team. Sophomore Katie Hathaway won the 200-yard individual medley, while the 400-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Christy Watkins, junior Summer Mack, sophomore Stefanie Rulis and senior Jennifer Strasburger won in 3:30.73.

UNC will play host to the 23rd annual Tar Heel Invitational Saturday, October 30 at 8:30 a.m. at Koury Natatorium. The Tar Heels return to dual meet action November 5-6 when they compete against Minnesota, Michigan and Nebraska in a quad meet at Minneapolis, Minn.
