CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina opened its 2001-02 swimming and diving season Wednesday afternoon by hosting the Georgia Bulldogs at Koury Natatorium. The three-time NCAA Division I champion Georgia women's team defeated the Tar Heel women by a score of 175-122, while the UGA men downed the Tar Heels by a score of 163-137.

Georgia's Bulldogs entered the meet with a record of 0-1 overall and 0-1 in Southeastern Conference meets after losing their season openers for both men and women last weekend against Florida. The meet was the season opener for both Tar Heel teams.

Georgia's women dominated as expected as the three-time NCAA champions won 14 of 16 events. Carolina victories were posted by Katie Hathaway in the 200-yard breaststroke and by Ashley Benner in three-meter diving.

The men faired better, winning both relay events and four individual events. Judd Glasco of North Carolina became the fifth fastest performer in the history of the school in the men's 1000-yard freestyle as he won that event in a time of 9:12.26. The only Tar Heels to ever swim that event faster in history are Yuri Suguiyama in 2001, Yann deFabrique in 1995, James Hamrick in 1992 and David Monasterio in 1993. In a great race, UNC junior Sean Quinn edged 2000 United States Olympian Kyle Salyards in the 200-yard breaststroke, 2:00.94 to 2:01.04. Other UNC individual wins were by senior Kevin Erndl in the 50-yard freestyle at 20.80 and sophomore Justin Donato in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:40.51.

Both Tar Heel relay teams also won. The 200-yard medley relay team of Kert Johnson, Sean Quinn, Drew Hathaway and Kevin Erndl won in a time of 1:32.82 while the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Donato, Michael Chenier, Justin Rossi and Erndl triumphed in a time of 3:04.59.

Carolina is idle until it hosts the Tar Heel Invitational on October 27. Carolina's next dual meet action is against Minnesota, North Dakota's men and Michigan's women in Minneapolis, Minn. on November 2-3.
