March 29, 2003

AUSTIN, TEXAS - Junior Yuri Suguiyama broke the school record in the 1650-yard freestyle and senior Sean Quinn earned All-America honors for the third time in his four-year UNC career as Carolina tied for 32nd place at the 2003 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships which concluded Saturday night at the University of Texas' Jamail Swimming Center.

Carolina scored nine points in the meet and tied for 32nd place with Florida State.

Suguiyama posted his second 13th place finish of the Championships in the 1650-yard freestyle Saturday night as he shaved 16 seconds off his time from last month's ACC Championships. Suguiyama's time was 15:05.10 and it broke the Tar Heel record of 15:07.36 set by James Hamrick in 1993.

Quinn earned All-America honors for the third time in the 200-yard breaststroke as he finished 16th in a time of 1:58.26. His prelim time was 1:57.23, his season best time in the event.
