ATHENS, GA. - University of North Carolina sophomore swimmer Yuri Suguiyama cut four seconds off his time at the ACC Championships as he finished 23rd in the 500-yard freestyle at the 2002 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday.

Suguiyama, a sophomore from Ijamsville, Md., swam the event in 4:24.01, just a second off his personal best time in the event. This year's championships are being held at the University of Georgia's Gabrielson Natatorium.

The Tar Heels' other NCAA participant, junior Sean Quinn, will swim his first event on Friday--the 100-yard breaststroke.

On Saturday, Quinn will swim the 200-yard breaststroke and Suguiyama the 1650-yard freestyle.
