Tar Heels' Suguiyama Takes 13th In 500 Freestyle

AUSTIN, TEXAS - University of North Carolina junior Yuri Suguiyama placed 13th Thursday night in the 500-yard freestyle at the 2003 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championship at the University of Texas' Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

For the Tar Heel junior from Ijamsville, Md., it was his first Top 16 finish in his career at the NCAA Championships and with it her earned his first All-America accolade.

Suguiyama swam the race in 4:20.81, slightly slower than his prelim time of 4:19.92, a career best which earned his the No. 12 seed.

Suguiyama's swim earned UNC four points in the team standings. The Tar Heels are 24th after the first day of competition.
