Three Tar Heel Swimmers Qualify For Consolation Finals
March 20, 2004
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - Three University of North Carolina women's swimmers qualified Saturday afternoon for the consolation finals at tonight's 2004 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Texas A&M University. Senior Jessi Perruquet qualified in the 100-meter freestyle where she placed 10th in the preliminaries with a time of 55.38. This year's NCAA Championships are being conducted in short courses meters rather than yards because it is an Olympic year. Perruquet placed third Friday night in the 200-meter freestyle. Other Tar Heels who qualified for Saturday night's consolation finals were sophomore Lizzy Bruce in the 200-meter breaststroke and senior Kelly Weeks in the 200-meter butterfly. Bruce qualified 12th in the prelims of her event with a time of 2:28.91 while Weeks qualified 15th in the 200 fly with a time of 2:12.41. Senior Becky Acker just missed a spot in the consolation final of the 200 breaststroke when she placed 20th at 2:30.54.
Senior Whitney Smith will swim Saturday night in a timed final of the 1500-meter freestyle.
