COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - Tar Heel senior Jessi Perruquet became the first member of the University of North Carolina women's swmming and diving team to qualify for a championship or consolation final Friday afternoon as she placed sixth in the preliminaries of the 200-meter freestyle at the 2004 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Texas A&M University.

Perruquet (Danville, Pa.) tied for the NCAA championship last year in the 200-yard freestyle. This year's NCAA meet is being conducted in short course meters rather than yards.

The finals begin tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
