UNC Women's Swimmers Tie For 41st Place At NCAA Championships

ATHENS, GA. - Led by Nicole O'Donnell's 15th place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle, the University of North Carolina women's swimming team completed action in the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in a tie for 41st place in the team standings. This year's championship meet was held at the University of Georgia's Gabrielson Natatorium.

Three Tar Heel swimmers were in action Saturday. O'Donnell finished 15th in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:26.99. Whitney Sprague was 22nd in the same event with a time of 16:33.27.

O'Donnell earned honorable mention All-America honors for her efforts. Sprague earned honorable mention All-America honors Thursday in the 500-yard freestyle.

Sophomore Lindsey Marck also competed on Saturday and she finished 29th in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.07.

A total of 46 teams out of the 61 entered in the meet scored points on the weekend. The Tar Heels finished in a tie for 41st place with four points. UNC was tied with Gardner-Webb, Northwestern and Notre Dame.

Auburn won the NCAA championships with 518.5 points, just three points ahead of second-place Georgia. Arizona (415), California (291) and Stanford (209) were also in the Top 5.

Among ACC teams, Florida State was 16th (84 points), Virginia tied for 23rd (34), Clemson was 28th (18), Miami was 30th (16), Virginia Tech tied for 36th (9), Maryland was 39th (7) and North Carolina was tied for 41st (4).
