Chip Peterson Sets Two School Records As Tar Heels Finish 27th
March 17, 2007 MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - Thanks to two school record swims by freshman Chip Peterson, the North Carolina men's swimming and diving team moved up to 27th place in the final team standings at the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota. Peterson finished sixth Saturday night in the 1650-yard freestyle in a career best time of 14:55.63. That is a new Tar Heel school record, breaking the old record of 15:05.10 set by Yuri Suguiyama in 2003. Peterson's split at the 1000-yard point of the race was 9:02.38, which also set a Tar Heel school record. Suguiyama's old record was 9:09.59 set in 2001. Peterson scored 13 points for the Tar Heels Saturday with his sixth place finish in the 1650. He also scored three points Thursday by finishing 14th in the 500-yard freestyle. Peterson's prelim time of 4:19.38 in the 500 free Thursday was also Peterson's career best and moved him into third place on the Carolina depth chart all-time. UNC finished 27th with 16 points, one point ahead of 28th-place LSU.
