North Carolina Stands 31st After First Day Of NCAA Championships
March 16, 2006 ATHENS, GA. - Whitney Sprague, a freshman swimmer at the University of North Carolina, earned honorable mention All-America honors Thursday night at the 25th annual NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. This year's meet is being hosted by the University of Georgia at Gabrielson Natatorium. Sprague finished 15th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:47.36. In the preliminaries of the event Sprague earned the final spot in the consolation final with a 16th place finish at 4:47.42. UNC freshman Nicole O'Donnell also competed in the 500-yard freestyle and she finished 46th in that event with a time of 4:53.75. Two Tar Heels will compete in the preliminaries Friday morning with Sprague swimming the 200-yard freestyle and sophomore Lindsey Marck the 100-yard butterfly. Thirty-two of the schools competing in this year's championships scored points on Thursday. The Tar Heels rank 31st with two points. Arizona leads the meet with 161 points and Auburn is second with 151 and Georgia third with 147. Four Atlantic Coast Conference schools scored on Thursday. Florida State is tied for 15th with 18 points, Clemson is 28th with four points, North Carolina is 31st with two points and Miami is 32nd with one point.
