Chip Peterson Earns Honorable Mention All-America Honors in 500-Yard Freestyle
March 15, 2007 MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - The University of North Carolina is tied for 29th place after the opening day of the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming & Diving Championships being contested at the University of Minnesota. The Tar Heels scored three points on Thursday courtesy of freshman Chip Peterson's 14th-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle. Peterson clocked a career best time in the event in the preliminaries. Peterson had his career best of 4:19.38 to qualify 13th in the event. He then swam a 4:20.39 in the consolation finals to finish 14th overall. Three other Tar Heels were in competition on Thursday with Philip Owen finishing 37th in the 500-yard freestyle and Hank Browning placing 38th in the 500-yard freestyle. Jeff James placed 43rd in the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday. Browning will be back in action on Friday in the 200-yard freestyle, the event he won the ACC championship in for both the 2006 and 2007 seasons. UNC's 800-yard freestyle relay unit of Browning, Peterson, James and Owen will also compete Friday.
