MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - Sophomore Whitney Sprague set a school record in the 1650-yard freestyle while finishing third in the event at the 2007 NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. Saturday night.

Sprague swam a time of 15:58.74 to take over 11 seconds over her previous career best time and here existing school record time of 16:10.02 which won the ACC championship in the same event last month.

It was the best finish by a UNC swimmer at the NCAA Championships since Jessi Perruquet finished third in the 200-meter freestyle at the 2004 meet.

Sprague, who was named first-team All-America for her swim in the 1650, also finished 15th in the 500-yard freestyle.

Sprague scored all 18 of North Carolina's points at the 2007 NCAA Championships.

The Tar Heels finished in a tie for 30th place at the meet.
