COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Through two days of the competition, the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Maryland's Campus Recreation Center Natatorium are following the national rankings perfectly. Virginia, which has won the past three ACC titles and is ranked #12 in the nation, stands first with 578 points, a lead of almost 200 points even through the Cavaliers had their 200-yard medley relay disqualified on Friday night. Georgia Tech, ranked #22, is second with 386.5 points while North Carolina, ranked #24, is third with 316.5 points.

The rest of the field has Florida State with 259 points, Clemson with 255 points, Maryland with 181 points, NC State with 162 points and Duke with 58 points.

The Tar Heels had 12 individual scorers and two relay scorers count Friday night as they increased their lead over fourth place FSU to 57.5 points and over fifth place Clemson to 61.5 points.

Senior Chris Helin and freshman Eddy Matkovich both turned in fourth-place finishes in the the 400-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly, respectively. Helin had a time of 3:53.39 while Matkovich swam a career best time of 48.57 seconds. Other championship finalists for UNC were junior Sean Quinn who finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in a career best time of 55.15 seconds and sophomre Yuri Suguiyama who was sixth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.34.

The Tar Heels finished second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:30.01. The relay included senior Kert Johnson (23.34), Quinn (25.26), Matkovich (21.67) and senior Kevin Erndl (19.74). UNC was also third in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 6:38.74. The relay included Matkovich (1:39.41), Suguiyama (1:38.51), Quinn (1:40.14) and sophomore Justin Donato (1:40.68).

 

 

Carolina had several other competitors in action on Friday night. In the 400-yard individual medley, sophomore Casey Coble was 10th in 3:57.14, junior Stephen Mohr was 11th in 3:57.61 and freshman Eric Mohr was 16th in 4:05.33. In the event*s bonus consolation heat, senior Seth Laughlin was 19th in 4:01.99 and freshman John Hartmann was 21st in 4:02.13. In the 100-yard butterfly, Kert Johnson was 10th in a time of 49.85 while senior Greg Johnson took 16th in 50.43.

In the consolation heat of the 200-yard freestyle, Donato placed 16th in 1:42.08. In the bonus consolation heat, UNC freshman Reid Owen was 17th in a career best 1:41.42 and sophomore Dan Vick was 19th in 1:42.80.

The consolation heat of the 100-yard breaststroke saw Erndl take a 10th-place finish with a time of 55.89. In the bonus consolation heat, freshman Griff Helfrich was 17th in a time of 56.98, his career best time, while sophomore Sinisa Haberle finished 19th in 57.85. Finally, Kert Johnson competed in his third event of the evening session, tying for 11th place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.74 seconds.
