CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Winning five event championships Friday night, the ninth-ranked University of Virginia men's swimming and diving team extended its lead Friday night to insurmountable status at the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of North Carolina's Koury Natatorium.
Seeking their second ACC title in a row and their fourth in history, the Cavaliers have accumulated 520 points through two days of competition. #21 North Carolina, which has yet to win any of the meet's 13 events, used its great depth to pull away from the rest of the pack. The Tar Heels are currently in second place with 417.5 points. Florida State, ranked #22, and N.C. State, rated #23, are in a tight battle for third place. The Seminoles currently have the upper hand with 338.5 points and the Wolfpack is in fouth place with 311 points. The rest of the field has Maryland in fifth place with 269 points, Georgia Tech in sixth place with 184 points, Clemson in seventh place with 183 points and Duke in eighth place with 94 points.
The evening started out with a victory by N.C. State in the 200-yard medley relay as the Wolfpack edged the Cavaliers in the event by times of 1:27.73 to 1:28.16. Both team set school records in the event. The Wolfpack's time was also an ACC meet record. The winning relay consisted of Braden Holloway, Jarod Proto, Valter Magnusson and Greg Solt. Maryland and Georgia Tech also set school records in the relay.
In the 400-yard individual medley, Virginia senior Doak Finch won his fourth successive ACC championship in this event with a time of 3:49.60. North Carolina's Chris Helin was the runnerup in a time of 3:52.32, while Virginia's Guy Yimsomruary took third place. Tar Heels Dave Slawinski, Mark Seidman and Stephen Mohr finished 4-5-6 in the event.
Virginia senior Jared Felker won the ACC championship in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.41, edging Georgia Tech's David Laitala by .04 of a second. Laitala's finish was the highest ever for a Yellow Jacket swimmer in an individual event in conference history. The tightly-bunched field included four other swimmers who went under 49 seconds in the event.
Virginia senior Austin Ramirez won his second event of the championship on Friday evening as he raced down teammate Troy Johnson to win the title in the 200-yard freestyle. Ramirez touched in 1:37.12 and Johnson finished second in 1:37.49. N.C. State's Matt Brado, North Carolina's Brad Kline, Georgia Tech's Josh Hersko and Florida State's Nelson Mora were tightly bunched in the 3-4-5-6 spots. Hershko's time was a Yellow Jacket school record.
Virginia sophomore Ed Moses won the title in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 52.82. Earlier in the day he set the ACC record in the event by placing first in the preliminaries with a time of 52.60. Florida State junior Brett Peterson was second in 53.64, also an automatic NCAA qualifying time.
N.C. State junior Braden Holloway was the individual winner in the 100-yard backstroke as he blew away the rest of the field in a winning time of 48.24 seconds. In the prelims, Holloway came close to breaking the ACC record and set an N.C. State school record in a time of 47.77 seconds. Virginia's Chris Mousetis, who won the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday night, finished as the runnerup.
Virginia then won the championship in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 6:33.95. The winning relay consisted of Finch, Mousetis, Johnson and Ramirez. North Carolina finished second in a time of 6:38.08. That relay consisted of Kert Johnson, Kline, Justin Rossi and Judd Glasco.
