CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina women's swimming team continued its long winning streak over N.C. State Friday night by scoring a decisive 157-86 dual meet triumph over the Wolfpack at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium.
Carolina celebrated Senior Night at Koury Natatorium with Jennifer Strasburger (Mercer Island, Wash.), Kelly McLaughlin (High Point, N.C.) and Ilana Kavadlo (Charlotte, N.C.) all swimming their final regular season meets. Strasburger responded with an inspired performance that led to individual victories in both the 100-yard freestyle (53.52) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.95). McLaughlin recorded an individual win the 200-yard butterfly at 2:03.23.
The Tar Heels used both talent at the top of the lineup and depth to subdue the Wolfpack. UNC won nine of the 13 events, including both relays. Shelly Cavaliere was the lone double winner for NCSU in the diving events.
With the win, the 17th-ranked Tar Heels concluded their regular season with a record of 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the ACC. N.C. State fell to 10-5 overall and 1-4 in the ACC. The Wolfpack closes its regular season Saturday at 2 p.m. in Raleigh against Clemson.
Carolina improved to 23-5 all-time against N.C. State. The last time the Wolfpack beat the Tar Heels in women's swimming was 1981 when Tar Heel great Sue Walsh was a mere freshman. UNC will play host to the ACC Championships at Koury Natatorium February 17-19, 2000 with prelims each day at 11 a.m. and finals each night at 7 p.m.
