Men's Swimming Falls To N.C. State
Tar Heels drop first meet to Wolfpack since 1997.
Feb. 4, 2000
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- N.C. State's men's swimming team won its 13th dual meet of the season in 14 tries Friday night, defeating the North Carolina Tar Heels 123.5-119.5 at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill. The win was the Wolfpack's first over UNC in men's swimming since 1997.
N.C. State dominated the meet, winning eight of the 13 events, but Carolina's depth kept it in contention until the Wolfpack clinched the win in the meet's final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Despite only five wins in the first 12 events, Carolina led the Wolfpack by one point headed into the final event. State won the meet when its 400 free relay victory outscored Carolina's 2-3 finish 11-6 in the event.
Carolina still leads the all-time series 35-30 and the Tar Heels have dominated the series over the past two decades.
N.C. State improved to 13-1 overall on the season and the Wolfpack clinched the regular-season Atlantic Coast Conference championship with a 5-1 record. N.C. State has now established itself with Virginia as the favorites to compete for the conference championship February 24-26.
Carolina was led by the efforts of sophomore Chris Helin (Setauket, N.Y.) who won three individual events for the Tar Heels--the 200-yard individual medley, the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard breaststroke. UNC's other victories were in the 1650-yard freestyle by freshman Stephen Mohr (Mequon, Wis.) and junior tri-captain Brad Kline (Charlotte, N.C.) in the 500-yard freestyle. N.C. State won both relay events, while individually Matt Brado won the 100- and 200-yard freestyles and Andy Johnson won the one- and three-meter diving events for the Wolfpack.
With the loss, Carolina fell to 6-4 on the season, 3-2 in the ACC. Competing against one of the most rigorous schedules in the country, the Tar Heels fell to 6-4 on the season and 3-2 in the ACC. From a percentage viewpoint alone, it was Carolina's worst season since a similar 6-4 mark in 1987. But with only three seniors on the roster Carolina will return a veteran team for the 2001 campaign. N.C. State will close its regular season on Saturday when the Wolfpack plays host to Clemson at 2 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C.Chris
The Tar Heels will host the 47th Atlantic Coast Conference Championships Thursday-Saturday, February 24-26 at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium. Ninth-ranked Virginia is the defending ACC champion.
