UNC Swimmers Sweep Maryland

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams turned in one of their best performances of the season Saturday afternoon as the Tar Heels defeated the Maryland Terrapins at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium. Coach Frank Comfort's #21 men's team defeated the Terps by a score of 185-106 while the #12 UNC women defeated the #26 Terrapins 155.5-138.5. The UNC women improved to 6-2 overall on the season and 3-1 against Atlantic Coast Conference teams. The Tar Heel men saw their record go to 4-4 overall and 2-2 against ACC teams. Maryland is now 4-7 overall on the men's side and 1-4 against the ACC. The Terrapin women lost for only the second time this season, falling to 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the ACC. Carolina had a comfortable enough lead on Saturday to be able to swim all of its entires in the final two events on an exhibition basis in both the men's and women's meets. The women won nine events and the men 10 events in compiling their winning margins. Both 200-yard medley relay teams posted victories with Janna Turner, Katie Hathaway, Christy Watkins and Jessi Perruquet swimming on the women's team and Kert Johnson, Sean Quinn, Eddy Matkovich and Kevin Erndl combining to win the men's relay.
Katie Hathaway and Jessi Perruquet were both two event winners for the Tar Heel women as Hathaway took the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes and Perruquet the 200- and 100-yard freestyles. Other women's winners were Janna Turner in the 100-yard backstroke, Kathleen Quinn in the 200-yard backstroke, Christy Watkins in the 50-yard freestyle and Jessie Brosch in the 200-yard butterfly.
Sean Quinn and Justin Donato both won two individual events for the men's team. Quinn took the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events and Donato the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. Other individual winners for Carolina were Stephen Krebs in three-meter diving, Eric Poitras in one-meter diving, Judd Glasco in the 1000-yard freestyle, Yuri Suguiyama in the 500-yard freestyle and Kevin Erndl in the 50-yard freestyle. Both teams will conclude their regular seasons on Friday when they host the NC State Wolfpack at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium at 5 p.m. |
