No. 8 Virginia Women's Swimmers Eke Out Win Over No. 17 North Carolina
Jan. 23, 2000 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- In a pitched battle between Virginia's top-line talent and North Carolina's considerable depth, the eighth-ranked Virginia women's swimming team prevailed over 17th-ranked North Carolina 158-142 in Atlantic Coast Conference dual-meet competition at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium Sunday afternoon. Carolina won only five of the 16 events but its depth kept the Tar Heels in the meet until the final relay when a Virginia victory sealed the victory. It was Carolina's first loss since October 21, 1999 when the Tar Heels were beaten by top-ranked Georgia. UNC is now 7-2 overall on the season and 2-1 in the ACC. Virginia remained undefeated with the victory as the Cavaliers are now 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the ACC. The victory was the second in a row for the Cavaliers over Carolina. UNC's series edge against the Wahoos was sliced to 20-5. Three of Carolina's five individual victories came from sophomore Katie Hathaway, who swept the breaststroke events by winning at 100 yards (1:03.58) and at 200 yards (2:17.66) while also capturing the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.84). Freshman Ashley Benner won the three-meter diving competition with a score of 273.22, barely edging out Virginia freshman Alison Sharp, who had a score of 272.69. The Tar Heels also turned in an inspired performance in the 100-yard butterfly as junior Summer Mack won in a time of 55.86, while senior Ilana Kavadlo clocked a time of 56.17. Kavadlo will be featured beginning Monday on www.tarheelblue.com as the Back on Campus.com Tar Heel Student-Athlete of the Week. Carolina will next be in competition on Saturday when it travels to College Park, Md. to swim against the Maryland Terrapins. The Tar Heels will be out to avenge a one-point loss to the Terps a year ago at Koury Natatorium. That was Maryland's first-ever win in the 18-meet series history. WOMEN'S DUAL MEET SUMMARY
