CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 20th-ranked University of North Carolina men's swimming and diving team lost its first dual meet since November 6, 1999 on Sunday, falling 176-124 to the 10th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium on the University of North Carolina campus in Chapel Hill.
Carolina proved to be competitive against the Wahoos but was not able to match Virginia's top-line talent and considerable depth. The Tar Heels gained five individual wins in the one-meter diving competition (271.42 points) and three-meter diving competition (317.62 points) by freshman Stephen Krebs, in the 50-yard freestyle by sophomore Kevin Erndl (20.74), in the 200-yard backstroke by sophomore Chris Helin (1:49.15) and in the 500-yard freestyle by junior Brad Kline (4:30.85).
With the victory the Cavaliers improved to 5-1 on the season, 3-1 in the ACC. Carolina fell to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the ACC.
Despite the loss to Virginia, the Tar Heels still lead the all-time dual-meet series against the Cavaliers by a lopsided 38-9 margin.
The Tar Heels will next be in action when they travel to College Park, Md. this coming Saturday to face up against the Maryland Terrapins in a 12 noon dual meet. Carolina then finishes its dual-meet season when the Tar Heels host arch-rival N.C. State at Koury Natatorium on Friday, February 4 at 5 p.m. The Tar Heels will also be the host school for 47th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships February 24-26. The defending ACC champion Cavaliers will be heavy favorites to win their fourth conference title in history (1987, 1990, 1999) with the top competition coming from the #20 Tar Heels and the #22 Florida State Seminoles.
