CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept dual meets from Kenyon College Wednesday afternoon at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium on the University of North Carolina campus. The Tar Heel men defeated the Kenyon Lords by a score of 162-107, while the UNC women triumphed by beating the Kenyon Ladies by a tally of 193-83.

Nine different Tar Heel men won one individual events as North Carolina cruised past Kenyon, while freshman Stephen Krebs captured both the one-meter and three-meter diving events to be the sole doubler winner for Carolina. The Carolina women had a quartet of multiple event winners. Freshman Janna Turner won three events--the 100-yard backstroke, the 200-yard backstroke and the 400-yard individual medley. Sophomores Katie Hathaway (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) and Molly Sullivan (200 freestyle, 200 butterfly) and freshman Christy Watkins (100 butterfly, 100 freestyle) each won two events for the Tar Heels.

Kenyon College, an NCAA Division III school in Gambier, Ohio, is equally well known as the alma mater of United States President Rutherford B. Hayes as well as for having the top small college swimming program in the nation. The Kenyon Lords have won the past 20 NCAA Division III men's swimming championships in a row, while the Kenyon Ladies have captured 16 successive NCAA Division III women's swimming titles.

The nationally-ranked UNC programs improved their dual meet records to 6-1 overall for the women and 4-2 overall for the men. The women have won six meets in a row and the men have a four-match winning streak. The UNC women are currently ranked #17 in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America rankings, while the Carolina men are #20 in the latest CSCAA poll.

Carolina swimmers and divers will next be in action on Wednesday, January 19, 2000 when the Tar Heels host Brown University at 3 p.m. at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium.
