March 14, 2006

The UNC fencing team had a successful day at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals with five fencers advancing to the NCAA finals.

Those fencers include foil fencer Steve Piantadosi a sophomore from Reisterstown, MD., transfer sophomore Will Randolph, a sabre fencer from Shawnee Mission, KS,, sabre fencer Bobby Ziechmann a freshman from Charlotte, sabre fencer Jennifer Kling a senior from Indianaplolis, Indiana, and epee fencer Mike Burkhart a junior transfer from Charlotte.

Head UNC fencing coach Ron Miller stated that "all of our people who went to regionals probably finished in the upper third nationally and obviously the people who are headed to the NCAA's are probably in the upper five to ten percent. Notes on National Championship Round

For a second consecutive year, Rice University and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority will host the championships at the JW Marriott Hotel, March 16-19, in Houston, Texas. 144 fencers will participate in the event.

The National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships include individual events in each of the six weapons (women's foil, women's epee, women's sabre, men's foil, men's epee, men's sabre).

Fencers will compete in a round-robin of 24 fencers in five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top four fencers in each event will fence direct elimination 15-touch bouts for first, second, third and fourth place. Absolute ties for the seeding will be broken as follows: for positions one through three, by a coin toss; for position four, by a fence-off.

An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
