UNC Fencing Team Finish Undefeated at 2004 Carolina Duals.

The UNC men's and women's fencing team win all their matches this weekend in fencing competition as the host school for the 2004 Carolina duals. The UNC men's team won 134 of 189 bouts while the sabre squad went undefeated. The UNC women's team won 146 of 189 bouts. N.C. State withdrew from competition on Sunday so the UNC women's "B" team filled the void. Head coach Ron Miller had nothing but praise for his team and the competition. "The tournament was very much a success and I will tell you why it was a success; Every school that was here, regardless of their won-loss record, definitely improved a feeling within in their own program that their program is meaningful, they will succeed, and they have goals and a future. All programs fenced representatively." Coach Miller added, "two ideas were solidified this weekend; the creation of a new Southern fencing alliance that will stretch from Baltimore to Florida and west to Tennessee with varsity and club teams. Secondly, the ACC schools are definitely interested in re-bonding the ACC. We will have an unofficial individual championship meet that will be contested on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of February 2004. However, the most important thing that happened this weekend was the growth of the sport of fencing."
