UNC Fencing Team To Host 2004 Carolina Duals

Jan. 15, 2004

This upcoming weekend, January 17th and 18th, the University of North Carolina men's and women's fencing teams will host the "2004 Carolina Duals" in Carmichael Auditorium.

According to head fencing coach Ron Miller, UNC is excited about hosting a home dual meet given the quality of the competition. Coach Miller notes that both the UNC men's and women's teams should do well. "Florida h;Haverford has some strong individuals, Johns Hopkins women's team is very respectable and most of the rest of the teams have very good individuals but their depth is developing. So, on paper at least, our depth is stronger. We do have a couple of challenges due to graduation and injury. One of our top epee fencers, Courtney Krolikoski, will be at a world cup event in California and the other number one, Ivana Ferrer, is injured. She will compete but she will not be 100 percent. The men's team is pretty much in shape, yet, we do have some minor injuries." Coach Miller adds, "I really feel like our team will fence well. They are well prepared, they understand what's ahead of them and their confidence level is high."

The majority of the teams that will compete this weekend were in the ACC or are coming into the ACC. The exception would be Florida, Haverford and Johns Hopkins. The "Carolina Duals" will begin with the men's competition Saturday morning beginning at 9:00 a.m. The women will compete on Sunday.
