Coach Ron Miller Earns 1000th Victory

Dec. 5, 2004

North Carolina's women's fencing team defeated Rutgers 16-11 Sunday and in the process Tar Heel head fencing coach Ron Miller captured his 1000th career dual meet victory. The veteran head mentor is now in his 38th season of coaching at Carolina.

Junior epee fencer Sallie Lampron won the individual bout that secured the meet victory over Rutgers' Candice Cummings and clinched Miller's 1000th career win. "We are a team, we put the effort in as team, we compete as a team and we win as a team," Lampron said.

As to the significance of the 1000th victory of his career Coach Miller stated that "the main significance of it is a culmination of, shall we say, the hard work of all our athletes from 1967 to the present. So it is an end result of their combined efforts. I have been associated with it all and I have seen it all since the beginning but it is not my record it is their record, the student-athletes. We are also very glad that it happened at home."

Overall in this weekend's dual meet the UNC men's team was 0-5, which gives it a 5-5 record for the season. This was the UNC women's team initial dual meet weekend of the 2004-05 season and it posted one win and lost four matches.
