UNC Fencing Team to Participate in Northwestern Duals.
Nov. 13, 2003
UNC Fencing Team to Participate in Northwestern Duals. The University of North Carolina fencing team will travel to Evanston, Illinois this weekend to participate in a weekend of dual meets hosted by Northwestern University. Standard NCAA dual meets run on a format where each team has three starting fencers per weapon squad, and the starting three of one team fences the starting three of the other team making 9 bouts per weapon squad. The meet is a combination of all three weapon squads so that there are a total of 27 bouts between the 3 weapons. The first team to win 14 bouts wins the meet.
Last week in the Temple Open, Tar Heel fencer Steve Piantadosi finished fifth in men's foil, Matt Jednak finished 10th in men's epee, and in sabre competition Wes Newkirk finished second while Nick Becketti finished eight. In women's competition Ivona Puszkarzcuk finished 12th in foil, Countney Krolikoski finished fifth in epee, and Liz Rainbolt finished third in women's sabre.
The Temple Open was a Brazilian Format Tournament. As explained by assistant UNC fencing coach Joshua Webb, this means that there are 2 rounds of pools. A pool consists generally of 5-6 fencers and everybody fences everyone else in their pool. Pool bouts are 5 touch (point) bouts. After this first round the fencers are seeded based on their win loss records with indicators (total touches scored minus total touches scored against), higher indicators being better. After seeding a second round of pools are fenced with the top fencers being separated across the pools. At the end of this round the fencers are seeded into a table (like the NCAA Basketball Table) based on the results of both pools. These bouts in the table are direct single elimination bouts fenced to 15 touches, with the winner advancing to the next round.
Fencing teams participating in this weekends tournament include Temple, Fairleigh Dickinson, Michigan, Ohio State, Lawrence, Wayne State, North Carolina, Michigan State, Johns Hopkins, Detroit-Mercy, Cleveland State, Notre Dame and Northwestern. The men's teams will see action Friday and Saturday, while the women's teams will compete Saturday and Sunday.
