UNC Fencers Impress At Temple Open

October 30, 2006

PHILADELPHIA - The UNC Fencing team participated in the 27th Annual Temple Fencing Collegiate Open on October 28 & 29. The largest collegiate fencing event held in the United States, this year's Temple Open featured over 450 fencers from more than 30 schools who competed in this six weapon event.

The Tar Heels had quite an impressive weekend. UNC assistant fencing coach Josh Webb stated, "this weekend was an encouraging weekend for our team. Most of our starters finished in the top 16 if not better. Our starting squad had an 80 per cent won/loss record which is good for us going into the season. Our younger fencers had great ideas but they didn't win many bouts. They scored more touches as a team than they did last year and that is always encouraging. This weekend at Penn State is a big jump in the level of competition. After this weekend I don't feel as bad as I did earlier in the season, and that is because of me being tough on them in practice. The main thing is they looked good this weekend which was fun to see."
