Penn State Garret Open--Notes from Coach Miller
Oct. 24, 2005
Q--Which student athlete has the best performance at the Penn State Open? Miller-"The best performance was by Benton Heimsath. He finished eight and he made the final. He even fenced well in the final bout even drawing the number one seed and that was part of the problem. Actually the men's epee squad had the best performance overall. Alex Ferrer had a good finish along with Mike Burkhart. So our three starters from last year had a good tournament. In women's epee, Courtney Krolikowski had a good day. In the third round of competition, even though she had a loosing record, her indicators were basically even. Basically what that means is that she either won big and lost close and that was frustrating because she just needed one touch to get to the final. Indicators are the difference between touches scored and received. So she basically scored the same number of touched she received, So even though her won loss record was 1-4, she had a zero indicator. What that means is that she won 5-1 and lost 4-5 bouts. So one touch anywhere would have put her up. She was frustrated but she did well." Concerning the men sabre squad-- Miller--"The men's sabre squad did great in the first round and just hit a brick wall in the second round. The level of this competition across the board is harder than the NCAA championship. In other words, the number of a and b rated fencers which is the way the USFA rates competitors, over two thirds of the field were a's and b's. So under the circumstances they fenced very well. I can't say it was a great result for us but it was a good result. There were no team standings in this competition. We don't fence anything with team until we go to Chicago. This was an individual and National open. This tournament generally is later in the season, so putting that in perspective it's a little to measure where we are because the schools that fence the way we do, in other words, that have some recruiting but not significant recruiting were not there. So essentially we were going against the best teams in the country. The in the county to beat this year were not there and that would be Penn and Stanford but everybody else was there. Notre Dame, Ohio State, Harvard and Yale have great teams this year."
Q--In the process of fencing at Penn State did recognize any standout play from any of the first year students? Miller--"Oh yes, quite a few. Our younger fencers did well, in fact, there was a change in the format in the competition that a number of the coaches were upset about, evidently there was a meeting that half the coaches didn't hear, the stated field size and number of promotions per round was that there would be three round of competition before the direct elimination, 36,24, and 16, and three of the weapons squads they dropped that to 24 or 25, so we would have had everyone on our team advance if there had been 36 up, but when they dropped the field from 44 to 24 in one round that was a little harsh for a first round cut. So that's basically what happened to a lot of our first and second year fencers; They just got caught by a heavy cut. One thing they did have was a consolation round and all our fencers that went into the consolation round fenced very well. Micah Prendergast won the consolation in men's foil and Nathan Danneman was second in men's epee. So once they got evened out they did fine. This tournament is difficult to use as a benchmark because we haven't seen ourselves fence against normal competition."
