UNC Women Fencers Finish Stong at Duke Invitational
Feb. 11, 2006
Durham, NC - The UNC women's fencing team made the best of an early morning sub par performance by winning nine of 27 bouts from Duke which, including the UNC men's 19 total bout wins over Duke on Saturday, gave the Tar Heels a 28-26 advantage and a subsequent claimed to one point in Carlyle Cup competition. North Carolina improved its lead in the 2005-06 Carlyle Cup competition to an 8-6 margin. Concerning the meet with Duke, University of North Carolina head fencing coach Ron Miller stated, "early in the meet we were doing fine, we had a couple of bad breaks, four or five bouts in a row. We should have picked it up and didn't. We were a little bit off emotionally, it had been a rough morning before this and things just compounded themselves and we just didn't have it in the end. I think our foil team fenced well under the circumstances. We did have problems with footing. It's disappointing. The women didn't fence badly, they fenced well, but not well enough to win." Prior to the Duke meet, the Tar Heels lost to Temple University 17-10 and Brandeis University 15-12. The afternoon session was a positive one for the Tar Heels with victories coming against M.I.T. 15-12 and Johns Hopkins 20-7. The UNC women's fencing team completed the season with a won loss record of 21-15. Both the Tar Heel women's and men's team will now await individual selections to the NCAA Atlantic South Regionals which will be hosted by Duke University on the weekend of March 4th.
