With the 19-8 victory over Duke, the Tar Heels have a distinct advantage in capturing the Carlyle Cup point. The Duke women would have to win at least 20 bouts against the UNC women's team to move ahead. Regarding the Duke match, assistant UNC fencing coach Josh Webb, stated that "the foil squad had struggled all year, however, today they decided to step-up and score a 8-1 victory over the Devils." UNC head fencing coach Ron Miller stated "the men's performance across the board overall was excellent. A little let down in the last match with M.I.T. but they still fenced well enough to win. Duke was probably the best meet we have fenced all year. All in all, obviously the men had a great day." The UNC men's fencing team completes the 2005-06 season with 24 wins and 11 losses.
