Carolina Fencers Finish Strong

EVANSTON, ILL. - The University of North Carolina men's and women's fencing teams finished this weekends match at Northwestern University with it's usual strong performance.

The men's squad opened the first Friday session by defeating the University of Michigan 18-9. In the second session the Tar Heels completely dominated Detroit-Mercy in the Sabre, Foil, and Epee events with scores of 9-0, 9-0, and 8-1. UNC closed out the day with victories over host Northwestern and Michigan State.

In Saturday's competition the Tar Heel men's team dominated with wins over Lawrence, Cleveland State and Johns Hopkins. Their only defeat of the tournament came at the hands of Wayne State.

In Sunday's Northwestern duals the UNC women fencers went three for three with victories over Detroit-Mercy, 23-4, Michigan State, 19-8 and Johns Hopkins,15-12. Temple, Northwestern and Notre Dame defeated the Tar Heels 21-6, 20-7, and 19-8, respectively.

Both the men's and women's team will next compete in dual meets at Penn State. This is will be a three day event beginning Friday, January 26 through Sunday, 2002.
