AS A SOPHOMORE
Posted a 48-13 record in regular season competition. Went undefeated both at Northwestern and Duke Duals, where he swept Duke's saber squad and Notre Dame's saber squad of Horton (5-1) and All-Americans Thanhouser (5-4) and Stearns (5-4). Placed 16th at NCAA Championships, where key victories included wins over All-Americans Jarek Jelinek of Detroit-Mercy and James Williams of Columbia.

AS A FRESHMAN
Saw a solid first season, coming into the first round of the NCAA tournament (Mid-Atlantic Regional qualifiers at Duke) as the first seed for men's saber. Finished 9th in that tournament after dropping an 8-2 lead over Penn State's All-American Franz Boghichev in the round of 16 direct eliminations. Went to NCAA championships and finished next to teammate William Randolph at 21st.

PREP AND PERSONAL
Attended Providence High School while training at Knights of Siena Fencing Academy, coached by Alan Blakeborough. His 2004-05 results included NC Division epee champion and national results included a 5th place in Div II Men's Saber at the USFA Summer Nationals in Sacramento, CA and the upset of Matt Kolasa (then ranked second in the FIE junior standings) at 15-14 in direct eliminations to reach 3rd place in Div I-A Men's Saber also in Sacramento, where Robert earned his A.

Born Robert Conrad Ziechmann to John and Nancy Ziechmann. Has a brother, Kevin, who also will fence at UNC. Is interested in music, photoshop. Admires Adam Crompton.
