Joe is a 2003 graduate of Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At Taylor Allderdice, Joe was an incredibly accomplished student-athlete. He was a member of the 2003 Academic WorldQuest Team, which won the state qualifying event and finished fourth at nationals. He was his freshman class president and was a member of both the Chamber and Concert Choirs. Joe was a four-year starter on the Varsity Wrestling team. He led the team to the 2001 WPIAL AA Wrestling Team Championships and to a second place finish at State Championships. His junior year, the team won the highly competitive Pittsburgh City League Championships. In his senior year, Joe served as a captain, leading the team to a 3rd place City League finish and a 5th place finish at the NE Regionals. Joe also was a member and captain of the Varsity Track team, competing in the 4x100m relay, the 100m dash, the 400m dash, the long jump, the triple jump, and the high jump. Joe also played four years of Varsity Football- as a corner back and wide receiver- and two years of Varsity Basketball.

An incredibly quick and versatile athlete, Joe began fencing with the late Joseph Odom at the Fencing For Fun club in Pittsburgh, PA. He later represented the Fencing Institute of America under Charles E. Greene. Joe has fenced all three weapons, obtaining a rating of "C" in foil and epee and a "B" rating in sabre. He is listed on the cadet epee and cadet and junior sabre points lists. While at Carolina, Joe represented the USA in Junior World Cup competitions in both 2003 and 2004. He has also represented the United States at two of the strongest junior events in the world- the 2004 Pries der Chemiestadt in Dormage, Germany and the 2005 Heracles Cup in Budapest. Joe is also a USFA rated referee in all three weapons (Level 4). He has refereed gold medal bouts at national championships in all three weapons.

During his time at Carolina, Joe has been very active on campus. He sings in the UNC Harmonyx Co-Ed A Capella group and often works with local band Language Arts. Joe also enjoys listening to new and interesting music and working out.
