Deon Thompson scored 20 points to help No. 6 North Carolina spoil Isiah Thomas' college coaching debut and beat Florida International 88-72 on Monday night in the 2K Sports Classic. Ed Davis added 13 points for the defending national champion Tar Heels (1-0), who had little trouble with the undersized Golden Panthers. North Carolina shot 56 percent and led by double digits much of the way to kick off its centennial season against Thomas, the Hall of Fame player and former NBA coach who took over the long-struggling program in April.  (more)

I remember my first Carolina-Duke football game like it was yesterday, my sophomore year in 1976 sitting with Mike Voight's parents in section 121 to glean their perspective on their son's performance for a Daily Tar Heel missive. Voight, nicknamed "The Space Cowboy" for an early 1970s song from the Steve Miller Band, was otherworldly that gray and chilly afternoon, carrying the football 47 times for 261 yards as the Tar Heels nudged past Duke, 39-38. (more)

With three first-team all-conference selections for the first time since 2002, North Carolina was one of four teams to lead the way with four members of the 2009 All-Atlantic Coast Conference men's soccer teams, which were announced Tuesday. Junior midfielder Michael Farfan, senior defender Zach Loyd and sophomore forward Billy Schuler each garnered first-team honors, while junior midfielder Cameron Brown was named to the second team. Additionally, rookie forward Enzo Martinez earned a spot on the league's All-Freshman Team. (more)

No. 5 North Carolina wraps up its exhibition schedule when the Tar Heels host Division II Carson-Newman Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Dean E. Smith Center. In addition to UNC's final action before Friday's regular-season opener against the College of Charleston, Tuesday's contest will pit UNC head coach Sylvia Hatchell against her alma mater. Hatchell earned her B.S. in physical education from Carson-Newman, where she played basketball and volleyball. (more)
