Nov. 25, 2002

Ryan Kneipper

Dan Orner and Ryan Kneipper share this week's honor as the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the week for November 18-24.

Orner kicked a 47-yard field goal as time expired to beat Duke, 23-21. It was the first time Carolina kicked a game-winning field goal on the last play of the game since 1986 and just the third time in the last 27 years.

Ryan Kneipper scored five goals, three of which came in a six-minute span early in the second half, to lead the University of North Carolina men's soccer team past Winthrop, 6-0, on Friday evening in the first round of the 2002 NCAA College Cup at Fetzer Field.

Kneipper's five goals tied an NCAA Tournament record and equalled the overall school record, set originally by James Reston in 1962. The previous school record for goals in an NCAA Tournament game was two, achieved on four occasions, including twice by Kneipper last year.

The five goals are the second-most in a game by any player in Division I men's soccer this season. Kneipper now has a career-high 18 goals this season. He has 12 career NCAA Tournament goals, one off the career NCAA record of 13 set by Virginia1s A.J. Wood from 1991-94.

Other nominees:

Darian Durant, who returned after missing four games with a broken thumb, completed 21 of 35 passes for 262 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing touchdown.

Jacque Lewis, who rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown. It was the first 100-yard rushing game by a Tar Heel this year.

Catherine Reddick had the game tying goal and assisted on the game winning goal as the Tar Heels beat #11 Tennessee to advance to the NCAA Women's soccer quarterfinals for the 21st year in a row.

Women's swimmer Laura Collier led the Tar Heels to the championship of the 2002 Nike Cup as the Tar Heels led the 10-team field by 385.5 points over second place Virginia Tech. Collier set the Atlantic Coast Conference record in the 200-yard backstroke as she clocked a 1:57.83 to win the individual championship in that race.

Men's swimmer Yuri Suguiyama posted second place finishes in the 200, 500 and 1650 yard freestyles as the #15 Tar Heels upset #9 Tennessee to win the Nike Cup championship. During the meet, Suguiyama set his own career best times in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. He posted times in the meet which rank this year in the ACC as follows: #1 in 500-yard freestyle (4:22.49), #1 in the 200-yard freestyle (1:38.59), #2 in the 1650-yard freestyle (15:33.08) and #7 in the 100-yard freestyle (46.24).
