Co-Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athletes Of The Week: Shalane Flanagan and Kelly Weeks

Flanagan, a junior from Marblehead, Mass., won the Atlantic Coast Conference women's cross country championship with a time of 20:06.3, 12 seconds ahead of second-place finisher, Florida State's Vicky Gill. The individual title was Flanagan's third straight. Flanagan is the second woman in ACC history to win three straight ACC cross country titles. Carolina's Karen Godlock also won three in a row from 1994-96. Weeks broke Melanie Buddemeyer's 17-year-old ACC record in the 200-yard butterfly as the 15th-ranked Tar Heels recorded victories over #16 Michigan and Harvard over the weekend. The Raleigh native was clocked in 1:58.03, breaking the old ACC mark set by Buddemeyer in February 1985. Weeks also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle and second in the 100-yard butterfly and swam on UNC's victorious 400- and 800-yard freestyle relay teams.
Other nominees: Alyssa Ramsey, a junior from Cornelius, N.C., scored a pair of goals, as the UNC women's soccer team defeated #16 Wake Forest 3-2. The UNC win gave Carolina its 12th ACC regular season championship in the past 15 years. UNC will be the #1 seed in the ACC Tournament which starts Thursday at Florida State. David Testo, a senior from Arden, N.C., scored the game-winning goals in men's soccer wins over UNC Wilmington and 6th-ranked Clemson. Sam Aiken, a senior wide receiver from Kenansville, N.C., had a career-high 10 receptions for 102 yards. Senior outside hitter Laura Greene led the Tar Heels with 6.00 kills and 5.25 digs per game as Carolina volleyball defeated ACC rivals Clemson and No. 23 Georgia Tech.
