May 23, 2007 Montross Camp Flourishing You might know Eric Montross as a member of the 1993 national champions or the current Tar Heel Sports Network basketball color analyst. Thousands of children know him as the source of hope. During his Tar Heel career, Montross was touched when he befriended Jason Clark, a teenager who would eventually lose his battle with cancer. The friendship led to the creation of the Eric Montross Father's Day Basketball Camp, one of the most unique camps on the summer camp circuit. The father/son format has led to several consecutive sold-out camp sessions (to inquire about being added to the wait list, call 919-843-2915). More importantly, with the camp operating for the benefit of the North Carolina Children's Hospital, it's led to over $670,000 being raised for the hospital. Thanks to the camp, the hospital now offers such amenities as the Jason Clark Teen Activity Center, a pediatric infusion room, and painted murals that brighten what might otherwise be sterile hospital hallways. Montross and his wife, Laura, have committed to aiding construction of a new Day Hospital, which will free up beds in the main hospital for children who need more critical care. To learn more about how you can support camp or get more involved with the hospital, call Amanda McGovern at 919-843-2915.
May 19, 2007 Tar Heels Finish On Top In SIOC All-Sport Rankings The 2006-07 school year has been an impressive one for Carolina, and the Tar Heels were recognized with the top spot in the all-sport rankings from Sports Illustrated On Campus. According to SIOC, "The rankings are calculated by taking the Top 25 in men's and women's tennis, lacrosse, cross country, soccer, basketball, water polo, volleyball, and hockey, as well as women's softball, men's baseball and football. A No. 1 ranking receives 25 points, a No. 25 ranking receives one point. To avoid being castigated on college sports blogs, we decided to give a little more weight to football and basketball; a No. 1 gets 50 points, No. 25 gets 25 points." Ohio State, UCLA, USC and Standford rounded out the top five, and ACC rivals Duke (10), Virginia (11), Maryland (17) and Florida State (22) also made the list. May 18, 2007 Edwards Signs With Bills Larry Edwards was one of two tryout players to earn a contract from the Buffalo Bills last weekend. The odds were against the 6-2, 235-pound linebacker from Tampa, Fla., as he had to beat out 13 other hopefuls. Edwards impressed the Bills coaches with his speed and ability to make plays. Last season, he finished fourth on the team in tackles despite missing three games with a broken collarbone. In 2005, he lead the team with 91 stops. Edwards is the fourth Tar Heel senior to earn a free agent contract following the NFL Draft, joining former teammates WR Jesse Holley (Cincinnati), LB Victor Worsley (Indianapolis) and TE Jon Hamlett (Atlanta) in the professional ranks.
